Melco N1ZS EX Music Library
The EX new series from Melco has received a major software update from the outgoing mk2 series.
This update will increase ease of use, adding much greater flexibility in the way you can browse, search and tag your music library. With this new software release SongKong is now integrated into the Melco as is Minimserver 2, which is the best UPnP server software in the industry. Combined together these 2 programs offer an incredibly powerful solution in managing your music library to ensure metadata is correct and consistent across your library.
A number of user profiles, Jazz, Classical, Simple and Rock have been added all with different parameters for searching (Track Artist for Jazz and Composer, Conductor, Ensemble and Works for Classical for example). Simple and powerful functions have been added such as one button press to find missing artwork or to replace metadata. By subscribing to both packages you get even more features and functionality.
vTuner Internet Radio is another feature being added, to take advantage of this your Melco must be connected to a USB-DAC and you must be using the Melco iPad App as well.
This ships with SongKong Lite installed which gives you some of the functionality of SongKong. In order to get the full version of SongKong you need to buy a licence from SongKong which is £50.00 that can be purchased from here
The version of Minimserver 2 is the starter edition, which gives enough functionality for most uses, but if you want create your own tags and get creative with the way you music is displayed you will need to purchase the full version of Minimserver 2 which is £28.00 and that can be purchased from here
By having the full versions of both programs really allows you have incredible flexibility in managing your music library.
Roon Endpoint will be added shortly after via another update as well.
Also the N1ZS EX has had its storage doubled in capacity over the N1ZS/2, it now features a 4TB SSD drive.
Melco produce a range of audiophile grade music source components with on-board hard drive storage. The model range has been designed to offer the best possible performance at all price points whilst being incredibly intuitive and simple to operate. They can be set-up and operated without the need for a computer or any IT knowledge whatsoever. They are incredibly versatile and can play music via a USB DAC or via a UPnP Network player. Please read our in depth Melco Audio article on this path for more in depth information.
You can archive your CD collection onto the Melco’s hard drives by simply connecting a CD optical drive (like Melco’s own D100) to one of the rear panel USB ports. A typical CD takes around 7-8 minutes to ‘rip’. If you are Melco is connected to a USB-DAC you also have the option to play CD’s as well.
As with the mk2 model the EX Series still has a dedicated Neutrik USB 2.0 port to connect to your USB-DAC for optimum sound quality. If you are using a UPnP Network player there is a dedicated Player port as well.
There are also 3 other USB ports on the rear panel for Easy Backup, Easy Expansion and Easy Import. If you have an account with High-Res Audio (a German download site) you can enter your username/password into the Melco and any purchases you make automatically download to the Melco – nice and easy, no computer required!
If connected to a USB-DAC control can be via Melco’s own app (iPad only) and you have the ability to stream Tidal and Qobuz as well. There are plenty of third party apps like Linn Kazoo and Lumin that work well also. If you are connected to a UPnP Network Player (like a Linn or Naim) you simply use the dedicated app for your existing player.
The N1ZS EX is the flagship Melco product, visually it looks identical to the N1ZH EX, so what is different about it?
Quite a bit in reality…..
The N1ZS EX uses 2 x 2 terabyte SSD.
These drives are manufactured in low volume hence the jump in price to £9999.00
It features the dual power supplies of the N1ZH EX (one dedicated to the main board and one dedicated for the actual drives), but with additional capacitor banks and the N1ZS EX has a dedicated hard drive mounting solution to eliminate noise and interference.
How does it compare to N1ZA & N1ZH (both mk 1 & mk 2) – the best way to put this is if you have a good system it’s probably best not to listen to a N1ZS unless you are ready to buy one. It’s one of those items that once you have heard it there is no going back unfortunately.
Melco have pulled out all of the stops in terms of the engineering with the N1ZS EX and it really shows when you listen to it.
The finest digital streaming transport in the world? Quite Probably!!
