Power Cables
Shunyata Research Power Cables
Shunyata Research’s history in power cord design is well documented. Steeped in science and measurement, every part and material within Shunyata Research power cables is custom designed and manufactured to measurably reduce noise (CCI link) and improve the efficiency of dynamic current flow to electronics (DTCD link). The results of more than two decades of R&D experience is an extensive range of high-value power cables that measurably reduce noise and improve access to instantaneous current.
Shunyata has invested extensive time and resources in creating its own range of connectors, conductors and the discrete filter systems implemented within its range of “Noise Reduction” power cables. The NR range reduces noise by around 12dB, making them popular for studio use as well the home systems. This CCI filter reduces noise being transferred from component to component in your system, when someone expresses an interest in a Shunyata NR power cable they always take people by surprise and a telling sign is people keeping coming back for more.
Applications of Shunyata power cables include noise-sensitive heart-surgery systems and delicate mastering systems, such as the one used by James Guthrie to re-master Dark Side Of The Moon for the 5.1 mix on SACD. When it comes to performance-oriented power cables, Shunyata Research is in a category and proven class of design all by itself.
There are 3 distinct ranges of Shunyata powers cables
Performance Range – this covers Gamma and Theta in both NR and XC form
Reference Range – this covers the new Alpha X and Sigma X, in both NR and XC form, although there is now a QR version of the Sigma X available
Ultimate Range – this covers Omega, in both XC and QR versions
NR Power Cables
The NR range of power cables has been incredibly successful, each cable in the range offers superb performance at their respective price points. There are 4 cables in the range – Gamma NR, Theta NR, Alpha X NR and the Sigma X NR
NR stands for noise reduction and these cables are designed to be used on components, the filter in the cable reduces both power line noise and also component noise, effectively stopping noise getting into a component from the power line and also noise escaping and potentially polluting other components.
There are quite obvious and meaningful steps between each of these power cables.
There are also 2 QR power cables available as well with the Sigma X QR an the Omega QR.
Sigma X QR is the highest performing Sigma cable, it takes the Gen3 NR technology and couples it with QR/BB technology which is the descended from the flagship Omega QR. It is primarily designed for using on high current power amplifiers, but it can also be used on digital components and DAC’s when you are looking to achieve the finest performance.
Omega QR is Shunyata’s flagship power cable and it has been a 3 year journey for Caelin in terms of R&D, listening, testing and measuring. The patented QR/BB™ and NIC™ technologies are miniaturised versions of what is contained with their power conditioners (Typhon, Denali and Everest)
XC Power Cables
If you require a power cable to use on a Shunyata Power Conditioner (or another brand of power conditioner) you will require one of their XC cables which are designed specifically to optimise the performance of Shunyata Research power conditioners. XC cables eschew noise reduction features in favour of enhanced DTCD (dynamic transient current delivery) which is essential to maximise the performance of power conditioners.
By default XC power cables are supplied with a C19 connectors as this is what all Shunyata power conditioners require, but if you need one with a C15 IEC it can be ordered.
Typhon T2 Umbilical Power Cables
The umbilical output on the Typhon T2 is a proprietary Shunyata design, one which twists and locks into place, it can never fall out or become loose and it was chosen to maximise performance from the TT2.
The type of cable you need for the umbilical output depends on how you are using the Typhon T2 within your system.
If you are using it with an existing Shunyata conditioner you need one of the TT2 Umbilical Cables. There are 3 grades of umbilical cable available all of which come with a C19 IEC connector – Reference, Performance and T30, they are all 0.5m long by default, but longer cables can be ordered.
Alternatively, if you are using your Typhon as a standalone conditioner you have the option to use this connection to power an actual component (giving you 3 outputs when combined with the 2 UK sockets), the same 3 grades of cable as above are available, but these cables all have standard C15 IEC connectors and they all 1.75m long, the same length as all of the normal power cables.
