The A-2 is the integrated amplifier from Soulnote’s middle range of products.

Step up from Series 1 to Series 2 and the first thing you will notice is the larger casework, the A-2 stands at 160mm tall, 5cm taller than the A1.

Series 1 models all have the front panel milled from aluminium, step up to Series 2 and that continues around the sides, the build quality is first rate and the A-2 weighs in at 20kg. The top plate of the A-2 ‘floats’ on the chassis, it is not firmly attached or screwed down. Soulnote have always argued that the case construction is just as key to overall performance as the actual components that make up the product itself.

The A-2 delivers 100 watts per channel into 8ohms, it is a Class A/B and like their other amplifiers it employs no negative feedback, it runs warm, but not full Class A warm.

It offers 6 analogue inputs (3 pairs of RCA + 3 pairs of XLR) along with a single pair of loudspeaker outputs.

The rear also sports a selection of switches, these allow the A-2 to be used in several different ways – standard integrated or stereo power amplifier for example. But, if you add a second A-2 you have the option to use them as a dual mono integrated, or a dual mono integrated configured for bi-amping, bridged mono’s or dual mono’s, comprehensive to the say the list, although using it as a standard integrated is the most common use for the A-2

Sonically the A-2 is an exceptional amplifier for the price of the admission, it takes the performance of the A-1 and develops it further in every way.

Sonically it offers wonderful clarity and immediacy, it has almost tube like sweetness about it, but do not mistake that for being overly warm or rolled off, it is hugely expressive and enjoyable to spend time in front the A-2.
